The Sri Dasmesh Pipes and Drums Band – or also known as the Malaysian Sikh Band is the only Sikh band in South East Asia and one of the elite few Sikh bands in the world. The foundation stone was laid down way back in 1988 when a group of young enthusiastic teenagers decided that they are going to give the Sikh Community something to be proud of. Ever since then, the Sri Dasmesh Band has become an inseparable part of the Sikhs in Malaysia.

Initially, members of the band were a devotional choir group. Very soon, after considering that the Sikhs should have national level representation and this resulted in the Band coming into existence. The reason a Scottish styled band was chosen was because the Sikhs and the Scotts have a similar history of martyrdom, bravery and heroism.

The most difficult part of starting the band was the instruments and the uniforms. The Bagpipe is a foreign instrument and very costly. We started off with a purchase of 12 pieces. Over the years, we have added on bagpipes made in Scotland. To date, we have 30 bagpipes, 10 Snare Drums, 6 Tenor Drums and 2 Bass Drums.
